Fishing in Taipei

I had a great day last Saturday standing by the river all day long in the sunshine, trying my best to catch a few fish. It’s probably not something you think about when you imagine Taipei city, but there is actually some good fishing to be done in and around Taipei. I did some fishing back in England when I was younger, but have never been much good at it. Recently I bought some fishing gear, and have been trying to discover a few places to spend a sunny afternoon. It’s not really about what I catch, but I just find it a relaxing hobby.

A Nice Stretch of River

Saturday was a glorious day, so I decided to take my gear for a little river fishing in Yamingshan. I used just a small roach pole with bread as bait. Simple rig with a single small hook and small float. Like I said, I really don’t know that much about fishing, but that’s what the other fishermen seem to be using there. I had also bought some river tracing boots which enabled me to go up and down the river trying out different spots. There seemed to be a lot of activity, and I got constant bites on the line.

Anyone know what they are?

After spending all day there, I managed to get six little fish. I have no idea what they are though. Would anyone care to enlighten me? I have a feeling that spring might not be the best time to get some monsters there, so maybe I will try again in a few months when they have had chance to mature and grow a little. Well, I hope so anyway!

To get there, just keep heading north on Fuxing N Rd through the tunnel and over the bridge. Once you get to the National Palace Museum just keep heading east on Zhishan Rd. The road eventually follows along the river, and there are some great stretches of water there.

  1. Not exactly a big haul, but I’m sure you had a good time! I just spent a few min on the internet looking for a photo list of freshwater Taiwan fish species, but didn’t find anything other than long (photo-less) lists. I’d guess that you have at least three different species there.

  2. Great pic of the fish! Think the third from the bottom might be a perch & top one looks like a trout but not really sure. sounds a great place to fish..thanks for sharing with us…

  3. Yeah, they are no monsters! Off again tomorrow. Hopefully get a few bigger ones. Trout sounds good. At least I could cook one of those if it was big enough. :)
